Celebrating the Holidays in Annapolis

Events galore to get you in the holiday mood

Thanksgiving Day lingers in our refrigerators with hot turkey sandwiches and turkey chowder to come. And now the holiday season begins its headlong rush to the new year.  There are concerts and craft shows ahead, house tours and hanging of the greens. Hometown Annapolis has an exhaustive list of all the doings around town from now to the dawn of 2008, and here’s a sampling to get you started:  

November 25 – Grand Illumination and Tree Lighting. 6 p.m. City Dock next to the Market House. 410-224-1770.

December 1 – Hanging of the Greens. Annapolis Jaycees deck out downtown Annapolis in the annual hanging of garlands throughout the capital. Volunteers get lunch while they spread holiday cheer. Call to confirm start time and meeting location. 410-224-1775.

December 1 - Annapolis Harbour Carolers. Strolling bands of carolers offer a respite from the holiday hustle. Singers Madrigale noon-2 p.m., Figgy Puddings 2-4 p.m. Annapolis Harbour Center, Route 2 south. 410-266-5857.

December 1 – West River Sailing Club’s first annual Parade of Lights. A festive fleet of lighted boats travels from the club, up West River toward Pirates’ Cove, looping by Shady Side and returning home. The Galesville Improvement Society will judge the displays and hand out prizes. 6 p.m. West River Sailing Club, 4800 Riverside Drive, Galesville. 410-867-9211.

December 1 – Severna Park Model Railroad Club open house, Severna Park Model Railroad Club, 3 Riggs Road, Severna Park. Noon-5 p.m. Free. 410-647-6077.

December 1 – Three Centuries of Celebration exhibit, Paca House, 186 Prince George St., Annapolis. Dec. 1-30. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, noon-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission. 410-267-8146.

December 1-2 – Holiday open house, by Ann Arrundel County Historical Society, 3-7 p.m., Benson-Hammond House, Aviation Boulevardand Andover Road, Linthicum. 410-544-8473.

December 6 – Holiday open house, 5-7 p.m., Mayor’s office, City Hall, Duke of Gloucester Street.

December 7 – Naval Academy Concert Band performance, 7:30 p.m. Mahan Hall, Naval Academy. 410-293-0263.

December 7-8 – State House by Candlelight, 7-9 p.m., Maryland State House, State Circle. 410-974-3400.

December 8 – Eastport Lights Up the Night with a community bonfire with hot cider and hot chocolate, followed by rounds of festive caroling through the neighborhood. Come bundled up for a night of fun before the lights parade. Starts at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, 725 Second St., 4 p.m. 410-295-7531.

December 8 – 25th Annual Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade, Spa Creek and Annapolis Harbor. 6-8 p.m. The event will be held rain or snow, with only high winds forcing a cancellation. 443-822-4676.

December 9 – Santa Toy Run and Holiday Party, Eastport Elementary School, Sixth Street and Severn Avenue. The Eastport Fire Department firefighters and their trucks will join Santa as he meets kids and collect toys for needy children. December 14 – AACC Orchestra’s winter concert, 8 p.m., Pascal Center for Performing Arts, AACC Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. Admission. 410-777-2457.
