Time to Get Your Home Ready for a Maryland Winter

Fall finally arrived! Get ready for what comes next.

For a while there it seemed as if Mother Nature would never get around to changing into her fall wardrobe. For weeks after the official start of autumn we had warm, humid days that felt more like June than October in Maryland.

But now she’s done it. Nature is reminding us that yes, winter is on its way. So before it gets too cold, take the time to do some home maintenance. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Clean your gutters and downspouts to keep leaves and other debris under control. Overloaded gutters can lead to wood rot and pest infestations, so take this simple preventative step. While you’re there, inspect the supports and make sure water is draining properly.
  • If you have storm windows, this is the time to put them up. Remove and inspect screens as needed, and switch out the screen panels in storm doors.
  • Check windows and doors for missing weather stripping or caulk, and replace them as needed. This will cut down on heating bills and prevent drafts.
  • Replace the filter in your furnace or heat pump unit.
  • If you have a maintenance policy on your heating system, schedule an inspection and maintenance call. If you don’t have a policy, consider having an inspection to catch minor problems before they leave you without heat on the coldest night of the year.
  • Turn off the water to outside faucets and allow the pipes to drain.
  • Inspect water pipe insulation, and be sure you know where the water shut-off valves in case pipes do freeze
  • If you have a fireplace, schedule a chimney inspection and cleaning to prevent chimney fires.
  • Fertilize and reseed your lawn. Clean out gardens and trim back perennial plants.
  • Prune trees and shrubs after the leaves turn to encourage growth in the spring.
  • Check trees for any limbs that threaten power lines or your roof and trim them back. Heavy snow or ice in the winter can break limbs and cause damage.

With the maintenance done, head back inside to enjoy a Terps football game, knowing that your home is ready for whatever winter brings.
