Things to Do and Discover for All Ages

Wednesday, July 11 - Bubble Science. Come try your hand, learn the science behind bubbles and try making different shapes. Specialized hands-on fun for two age groups: Ospreys (ages 5-7) 9-10 a.m. Herons (ages 8-12) 11-Noon. Admission. Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, 647 Contees Wharf Rd., Edgewater. Friday, July 13 - Archaeology with the Lost Towns. Help history come alive by learning about our colonial past and participating in a dig at the Contee Farm property , sponsored by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center partnering with the Anne Arundel County Lost Towns Archeological team.Bring clothes that can get dirty, gardening gloves and a water bottle. Saturday, July 14 - St. Margaret’s Joust Tournament. A day of jousting, crafts, children’s activities, and "home-cooked" food at the St. Margaret’s Ring Joust and Country Craft Faire. Saturday,  July 14 - Night Time Stars and Constellations. Learn to read the night sky with a National Air and Space Museum educator. Ages 12+. 8:00-10 p.m. Admission. Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15 - Capt. John Smith Festival. Come see twelve modern adventurers who have been rowing and sailing along the route explored by Captain John Smith in 1608. The voyagers, their 17th-century-style boat called a shallop, and a fun-filled display will be a part of a celebration of the region’s history, heritage, and environment. 10:30 a.m. Free. Wednesday, July 18 - Birding - Special Access Series. Visit an old abandoned house, look for shore birds, osprey, forest birds, and marsh birds on Corn Island. The island sits on the Rhode River and is accessed by a narrow spit of land. Adult birding program. Bring binoculars if you have them. 8:30-10 a.m. Admission. Wednesday, July 18 - Puddle Stompers: Count Along with Me Nature Hike. Children ages 3-5 yrs. of age and their parents/guardians are invited to look under rocks and logs, stroll through marshes, and journey through forest paths. 3-4 p.m. Admission.
