Bowie Teen Selected for Disney’s Dreamers Academy
100 high school students will explore future career options
Who wouldn’t love a long weekend at Walt Disney World in January? But for Nevasha Nobel of Bowie, rather than rides, the four day adventure will be filled with workshops and learning that will help develop career goals. The Central High School student was one of 100 students selected from across the country to be part of the first Disney’s Dreamers Academy program during Martin Luther King weekend in January 2008.
The Academy concept was created by radio personality Steve Harvey to immerse students in creative and non-conventional career opportunities. The interactive workshops will focus on subjects ranging from Disney "Imagineering" techniques to the business of sports, culinary arts, and entertainment. The program was designed to celebrate deserving students, help them explore their talents, and foster skills in communication. Walt Disney World © Theme Parks provide an inspiring classroom for creativity to flourish.
Walt Disney World Resort partnered with Steve Harvey to create this innovative program designed for students who show promise — but may need a little motivation — and share one common trait: the power to dream.
"Disney’s Dreamers Academy is very important to me because it’s about the education of our young people who are oftentimes slighted and don’t have the chance to be exposed to a variety of job skills and job sets and meet with people in the fields they’re interested in," said Steve Harvey. "We want to give our young achievers the tools to become overachievers — to take their dreams stratospheric."
