Crofton and Bowie – Tales of Two Cities

Two Maryland towns, two different histories

Crofton and Bowie are both in Maryland, both in the Washington, DC area, and near each other on the map. They are also good places to live, and you might think that they had grown up at about the same time. In fact, almost 100 years separates their foundings.

Bowie

Bowie got started first when the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Company began the construction of a line from Baltimore to Southern Maryland. In 1870 a land speculator sold building lots around a railroad junction and named the settlement Huntington City. Huntington City was later re-named in honor of the Oden Bowie who was President of the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad at the time had been Governor of Maryland.

As the rail system grew and expanded, it brought prosperity to the region. The Southern Maryland Agricultural Society built the Bowie Race Track in 1914. At the same time, a teacher-training college that would become Bowie State University was built for African-Americans just outside the town; this has become Bowie State University

Honoring the tradition of a rail town, the City of Bowie has preserved this piece of its history in the Huntington Railroad Museum, which includes historic materials displayed in the station's restored railroad buildings.

Over the years, Bowie has grown to become the largest municipality in Prince George's County, and the city with the fourth largest population in Maryland. It has 72 ball fields, three community centers, an ice arena, the 800-seat Bowie Center for the Performing Arts, and a 150-seat theatrical playhouse, a golf course, and three museums. Bowie is home to the Bowie Baysox, a Class AA Eastern League professional baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The city has recently added a state-of-the-art senior citizens center and a gymnasium for community programs. Bowie is a family-oriented community whose motto is "Growth, unity and progress"

Crofton

In July 2007 Crofton was named by Money magazine as one of "100 Best Places to Live" in the United States. That's not bad for a town that is now only 44 years old. Founded in 1964, Crofton is a new town and planned community that was begun at the same time as Reston, VA and Columbia, MD. The town's name was chosen by the developer to imply a pleasant place to live, and was named after a small township in England.

Originally an exclusive gated community, Crofton's gates were opened and they now serve as a welcome symbol for this community just off of crowded Route 3. Located in Montgomery County, it offers a small town feel, while being convenient to major roads leading directly to Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Annapolis. Crofton has developed into a desirable community for young families with a diversity of housing and good schools.
