Annapolis Hums with Legislative Activity

Maryland's legislature begins 425th Session

It happens every January…the legislators come back to Annapolis. This year is no exception, so on Wednesday, January 9, the Maryland General Assembly – the House of Delegates and the Senate – began the annual law-making session that will continue through April 7. For 90 days, the 141 Delegates and 47 Senators will gather in the State House to act on more than 2,300 bills including the State’s budget.

Not sure who your Delegate or Senator is? You’ll find a handy map and look-up tool here: http://mdelect.net/. You can also send an email to your state Senator or Delegate from this page. Once you have the names, this page has links to the brief biographies and photos of the Delegates and Senators. Remember, there are your state representatives but they cannot read minds. If you have something you want them to know, call them or email.

There’s a saying that "All politics is local," and to prove that again, Bowie is hosting its annual Legislative Open Door session tomorrow, January 12, at Bowie City Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Bowie’s County Council representatives and state legislators will be available to meet and greet visitors, and there will be a panel discussion beginning at 9:30. Then on January 24, Mayor G. Frederick Robinson will give the annual State of the City address at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 24 at T.J. Elliott’s restaurant in Bowie. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by breakfast at 8 a.m. and the presentation at 8:30 a.m. To register, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 301-262-0920.The speech will be re-broadcast on Bowie’s cable channel and the text of the speech will be available at www.cityofbowie.org.
