Late Summer Means Outdoor Activities in Maryland

As the summer winds down to those final days of vacation, and just before the kids head back to school, there is a flurry of events for every taste. Here’s a list of what’s happening this week, courtesy of HometownAnnapolis.com.
Up Close with Nature
· Aug. 22 - Puddle Stompers: Five Senses Hike. Children ages 3-5 yrs. of age and their parents/guardians. Look under rocks and logs, stroll through marshes, and journey through forest paths. 3-4 p.m. Admission. Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, 647 Contees Wharf Rd., Edgewater. · Aug. 25 - Monarch Migration. Capture, tag, and release Monarch Butterflies for this migration study. Program is for ages 7 and up. Meet at the Main Parking lot. 3 p.m. Pre-registration is required. · Aug. 25 - Butterflies: Nature’s Festival of Colours.
Discover the role that butterflies play in the ecosystem and learn to identify several common to Maryland on this guided 2.5 mile hike. Bring water and dress for the outdoors. 8:30-11 a.m. Ages 10+. The North Tract at Patuxent Research Refuge, Rt. 198 between the Baltimore/Washington Parkway and Rt. 32, Laurel. · Aug. 26 - Crazy for Caterpillars. Learn about the many ways these baby bugs have adapted to avoid being eaten. We will take a short hike to look for caterpillars outside, then come back to the Wetland Center to make some caterpillars of our own. All ages welcome. 2-3:30 p.m. Admission. · Aug. 26 - Earth Walk. Connect with nature on this guided hike by using your senses to explore the natural world. 10-11:30 a.m. Ages 10+. Free. Step into History
· Aug. 21 and 25 - History Hike. Travel forwards and backwards through time on a walking tour of historic Annapolis. Imagine how people in the past struggled for freedom and how things might be in the future. For children ages 6 to 10 years old. 10 a.m.-12 p.m. (Aug. 21) or 3-5 p.m. (Aug.15). Admission.
