New Principals Lead in Bowie and Laurel

Two elementary schools have new leadership

Elementary school children are splashing in pools and enjoying camp during the last month of summer vacation. But at two of their schools, new principals are preparing to lead them to future success.

Audrey Briscoe of Bowie is the new principal of Oaklands Elementary School in Laurel. A veteran of more than 30 years in county education, Briscoe has been chosen to focus on improving student achievement and raising scores at the South Laurel school. For her, the key is helping students believe in their abilities and in themselves. She works collaboratively with parents and teachers to create an environment of achievement.

One of her goals in her first year as principal will be to continue the regrowth of Oaklands' PTA with events during both day and evening hours. She will also work to communicate better with the growing Hispanic community by choosing a parent liaison who is fluent in both Spanish and English.

With Principal Briscoe leading them, Oaklands Elementary students can look forward to a year of enthusiasm and support as they strive to improve.

New High Bridge Elementary School welcomes their new principal, Chuck Eller. Like Briscoe, he emphasizes teamwork to achieve success, and sees his job as similar to that of a coach. Working collectively with the staff, he wants to be sure to focus on the children and make decisions that put their best interests first. In a recent article, "Eller said teachers and administrators sometimes are overwhelmed with all they have to do and forget to reward students for what they have accomplished."

Educated at Bowie State in business, Eller later spent 14 years teaching sixth grade, and is looking forward to working with a students in the wide range of ages at the elementary school level. One teaching tool he has brought with him is a favorite of children – a skeleton that is now in his principal's office. Students used to decorate the skeleton for different times of the year; soon it will be sporting a summer outfit complete with Hawaiian shirt to welcome teachers back to school.

With principals like Briscoe and Eller, area elementary students can look forward to a successful – and fun – year ahead.
