Say "Annapolis" to many people and they will think of the U. S. Naval Academy, sailing, and maybe the first capital of the United States. Four of the signers of the Declaration of Independence lived here, and all of their homes have been preserved. William Paca's home is an impressive restored 18th-century mansion, built in 1763-1765. Its style is reminiscent of English country villas of the time, and its two-acre garden is a favorite destination. The original garden declined and disappeared over the centuries, but in the 1960's and 1970's, extensive excavations and research uncovered the original design of the garden. If William Paca could see his garden today, he would recognize the plants of the 18th century that have been used to restore it to its original beauty. Government House, official home of Maryland's governor and his family, is also in the Georgian style, but it didn't start that way. Built in 1870 it was originally a Victorian style mansion.
