Fairwood Green has Groceries and Gas

New grocery store is first tenant in community shopping center

A brand new Safeway supermarket opened last week as the first tenant in the Fairwood Green shopping center.  Built to serve the Fairwood community of 1,800 homes as well as surrounding neighborhoods, the new center will have more tenants including a bank and health facility in the near future.

The Fairwood Green shopping center is a project of General Growth Properties, formerly the Rouse Company. It is built on the community concept originated in Columbia where Rouse planned and built residential areas surrounding a town center. There, residents could find basic needs such as food, gas, banking, and essential services, often within walking distance of home. Green, open space is part of the plan for the shopping center and nearby community center, playgrounds, and common areas.

There had been some concern locally that the opening of the Fairwood Green Safeway would speed the closing of another store just a few miles down the road. But Bowie officials have been assured there are no plans for any closings.

The new Safeway is not on the same scale as its sister store at Bowie Town Center, but it does have one unique feature – a gas station. Now you can fill your grocery cart and gas tank in one stop!
