A BRAC Housing Boom?

The BRAC could mean good news for Bowie home sellers

By now, we’ve all heard a lot about the effect that the Base Realignment and Closure program – the BRAC – will have on Maryland, and especially Fort Meade.  Just a few miles up the road, some 5,000 new employees will be arriving in the next few years as military bases elsewhere are closed.

Now take those 5,000 new Fort Meade employees and realize that they come with families, and that their jobs will create other jobs for contractors and subcontractors.  These people will need places to live, and retail centers for shopping and dining out.

Bowie Mayor G. Frederick Robinson said recently that the city is considering the effect of the BRAC expansion and looking at available options.  "We believe this process offers the possibility of a profound and positive economic effect…", he said, noting that active involvement from the beginning will benefit the community most.

Though the effect on commercial real estate and businesses is not clear, Bowie officials expect that increased demand for housing will be the most likely result of the BRAC for the city.  While developers consider options for building housing and mixed use developments, the market for existing homes should stay strong.

The "Special" Ed Haraway Team is watching the market, and we’ll keep an eye on the changes as they happen.  For Bowie home sellers, 2007 could be a very good year.
