Walk This Way to Old Bowie

Bowie receives a Community Legacy Award

The City of Bowie received good news a few days ago when it was announced that a Community Legacy Award will fund a feasibility study of creating a trail to link the MARC train station and Bowie State University to Old Bowie.

As reported by the Bowie Blade, the Community Legacy Awards come from the State of Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The awards  "…provide funding for capital improvement projects for a number of projects, including ones that improve community gathering places, streetscapes and facades."

Bowie is developing a walkable communities project in the area of Old Bowie. Joe Meinert, the city’s planning director, explained that the trail would start at Tanglewood Park in Old Bowie and wind its way to Bowie State University.  Meinart said, "It unifies the neighborhood and provides safe pedestrian access back and forth from BSU and Old Bowie." The $30,000 grant will allow Bowie to begin the engineering design for the project in this year’s budget.

Bowie’s emphasis on a walkable, livable community, is just one more example of why this is a great city for visitors and residents alike.
