The summer has flown and soon enough the days of teens sleeping until noon will disappear. Some, like Bowie High School sophomore Marecya Burton, are trying to adjust their body clocks now so that first week won’t be such a shock.
"I’m starting to get in that mindset that when I get up I take a shower and don’t mess around," said Burton in a recent Gazette article. "When the school year starts if I mess around I’ll miss the bus."
Schools in Prince Georges County start next Monday, August 21 – the earliest of all Maryland counties. While Marecya Burton is preparing in her way, the administrators, teachers, and staff are making their own preparations for the 2006-2007 school year. They are setting up classrooms, reviewing curricula, and meeting their colleagues and reviewing school policies.
Even the State is lending a hand to parents faced with buying all those back-to-school clothes and shoes. Maryland is giving shoppers a tax break from August 23 to August 27 on clothes and shoes priced individually at $100 or less. The state sales tax is usually 5 percent of the purchase price, and shoppers will still have to pay the full tax if the item costs more than $100.
With just days left before the first bell, students and teachers will be enjoying the last days of summer and the anticipation of a new school year.
